How To Fix Damaged QuickBooks Company File?

QuickBooks Desktop uses QBW (company file) to store data like charts of accounts, estimates, forms, reports, and other data.

Nevertheless, QBW files are susceptible to corruption for a variety of reasons. Many QuickBooks users face QuickBooks company file corruption issues. When this happens, you may encounter issues like 6000 series error, H202, C series, etc.

So, what causes corruption in QuickBooks company files? There are certain reasons for QBW corruption, like virus infection, improper termination of QuickBooks, large file size, bad sectors on hard drives, unexpected system reboot, and more.

Whatever the reason for the corruption in the QuickBooks Company file, you can repair and restore QBW to resolve the issue. In this guide, we will examine methods for repairing the QBW file.

Repair the QuickBooks company file – Methods You Should Know.

Follow the below methods to repair the QBW files:

Method 1-Use QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery:

QuickBooks comes with an inbuilt QuickBooks recovery tool- QuickBooks auto data recovery to restore the corrupt QuickBooks company file. But to use this option, you should have a readable QuickBooks backup file (.QBB). It requires the latest Transaction Log (.TLG) file and a copy of QBW file to restore the recent transactions in QuickBooks. Here are the steps to recover the recent transactions in the QuickBooks company file:

  • First create a new folder on your Windows desktop like QBTest5.
  • Next locate to your company file folder and search for .tlg file. This file is same as the company file.
  • Once you find the file, copy the Transaction log (.TLG) file from your company file folder and paste the copied file to the QBTest5 folder.
  • Next, open the QuickBooksAutoDataRecovery folder in the same company file folder.
  • Next, copy and paste the .QBW.adr file to the newly created QBTest5 folder.
  • The new folder now contains both a .TLG and .QBW.adr files. Right-click on the QBW.adr file, select Rename, and delete the .adr extension.

Note: This method does not work for repairing QuickBooks company files in QuickBooks Accountant Editions. Also, it may fail to work when the size of the backup file is large, i.e., more than 1.5 GB. Because the large-sized backup file fails to create an ADR file.

Alternatively, you can restore your backup using the below steps:

  • In your QuickBooks application, locate the File and click Open Company/Restore Company.
  • Click Restore a backup copy and then click Next.
  • Click Local Backup and then click Next.
  • Search for the backup file.
  • Select a folder where you want to save the restored QBW Company file. Next, click Open and then Save.

Method 2-Rebuild the QuickBooks Company file

One simple way to rebuild a QuickBooks company file data is by using Verify and Rebuild tool. When you use the Verify utility, QuickBooks identifies integrity or other issues in the company file. If it finds any issues with the company, then rebuild the QBW and fix the issues using the Rebuild Data utility.

Method 3-Use QuickBooks file Doctor tool

If the Verify and Rebuild tool fails to repair the company file, then you can use the QuickBooks File Doctor tool of the QuickBooks Tool hub. It is an open-source tool recommended by Intuit to repair company files in QuickBooks. However, it has file-size limitations, and you require QuickBooks admin credentials to repair company files. To try the QuickBooks File Doctor tool, follow the steps below:

    • Download, install and launch QuickBooks Tool hub.
  • In Tool hub, click Company File Issues.
  • Click Run QuickBooks File Doctor option.
  • In the QuickBooks File Doctor window, click on the problematic company file from the drop-down menu.
  • Click Check your file and then click Continue.
  • Enter the QuickBooks admin credentials and then click Next.

Wait for few minutes till the scan is complete. Once the scan completes then open QuickBooks and then try to open the company file.

Method 4-Use a professional QuickBooks repair tool

If the QuickBooks file doctor tool has stopped working or failed to respond that indicates the size of the company file is large or the file is severely corrupted. In such a case, you can use a professional QuickBooks repair tool like Stellar Repair for QuickBooks. It can repair QBW files and data without any file size limitations and with complete precision.
