They just let their employees get on with what they can do, but don’t bother spending time training them up. While that might sound normal to you, it’s not in the best interest of the business. First up on the list, we’re going to mention that you should help them move up in their career. What we mean by this is that you should be paying attention to what they need to move to the next level. You should be mentoring them and helping them understand what they should be doing next, giving them advice where you can. There are going to be times where there isn’t much that you can do at that specific moment, but that’s okay. There will come a time where you are able to do this, and when that time comes, you’ve got to make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward.
If you run a large business, we know that you cannot support every employee individually. But, what you can do is you can delegate this task to your managers. Make it their mission to help the people in the team grow into as much of a success as possible.
Getting Them Certified In Different Areas
It’s also imperative that they have all of the necessary qualifications and are certified in all of the right areas. For example, if they are going to be working with hazardous materials, ensure that they have their whmis certification, and if they don’t, make sure that they get it asap. They have to have all of the right certifications in order to move forward with their job so that you know they are doing so properly and safely.
You may find that there are certifications that they can take that are not essential but will massively help with their career development. If you find one of these, have them take it under your business. The reason for this is that you are then providing them with the tools that they need to better themselves, and this will help them move forward.
Evokes A Feeling Of Loyalty
When you help your employees progress and get better, they will start to feel a stronger sense of loyalty to you. This is not to say that this is the only reason you should do this, or that they are never going to leave your business, but it’s a good thing to think about. As you help someone grow, they are going to lean on you but they are also going to feel thankful to you for helping them when they needed it. It’s for this reason that you will find they will never leave you in the lurch, and they will likely stick around for as long as they can as long as it is not hindering their career progression.
When the time comes though, you have got to let them go. Parting on good terms means that if you need their help, they are likely to come back and provide you with that help where they can. It’s good to create and keep these relationships in the business world when it’s such a tough place already.
Treat Them Well, Keep Them
We just want to make one quick point, and that’s if you treat them well, you will likely get to keep them for a long time. Of course this is not always the case, but the better you treat your employees, the more likely they are to stick it out with you. Everyone is always searching for a cool boss, one that they get on with and helps them where needed, so be that boss.
At the end of the day, your employees are not the only ones who are going to benefit from your continued support. Your business overall, and you yourself are going to benefit massively, even if you can’t see that right now. We can all but promise you that if you start making changes to the way that you treat your employees and their careers, that you will see a marked improvement sooner than you would even believe.
