Customer Profile

Nood is a personal care brand that offers at-home solutions for a better, more painless hair removal process. Their flagship products, The Flasher 2.0 and the Flasher Pro, use IPL (intense pulsed light) technology to target and destroy melanin in hair follicles to achieve long-term hair removal and even younger-looking skin. Combined with their body care serums and shaving tools, Nood’s product catalog gives you lots of ways to get a smooth and hairless look that lasts.

About Nood

Sam Garst was looking for a painless, bladeless way to get smoother, hairless skin. But when he tried laser hair removal, he had an absolutely terrible experience — it was painful, expensive, unpleasant, and even caused a bad skin reaction.

Unwilling to settle for razors or waxing, Sam set out to research other solutions. He soon stumbled on IPL (which stands for “intense pulsed light”): a hair removal method that uses a broadband pulsed light, rather than a single laser light beam, to target and destroy the melanin in hair follicles.

Sam began using IPL and was shocked by how well it worked. But he was also confused: why hadn’t he heard of this option before? No one he spoke with knew what IPL was, either.

Intrigued, Sam set out to fill the market gap himself. He soon launched the hair removal brand Nood, and their flagship product — the Flasher 2.0 — quickly gained steam. Today, Nood has 7+ unique products, a thriving retail partnership with Target, and tens of thousands of satisfied customers.

We sat down with Nood’s Operations team to discuss how ShipBob helps them stock Target stores across the US, save time, and achieve stellar support.

Ditching self-fulfillment for global and omnichannel scalability

As told to ShipBob by Hayden Pembridge, VP of Operations at Nood.

When we first started out, our CEO and I would fulfill and ship orders from his apartment. It didn’t take us long to realize that that strategy wasn’t scalable. Picking and packing orders ourselves was expensive and time-consuming, and his apartment was getting really crowded.

Our CEO reached out to a couple different fulfillment providers, and after evaluating them, we determined that ShipBob was the best option for us. We already had a thriving DTC business, but we knew we wanted to invest more heavily in B2B in the future. Since ShipBob is an omnichannel fulfillment partner, they were able to handle both our DTC and B2B fulfillment, allowing us to manage everything under one roof.

ShipBob also has fulfillment centers throughout the United States and worldwide, so we knew that if we wanted to expand to Canada or Australia in the future, we would be well-supported in our expansion efforts.

Launching in 1,500 Target stores seamlessly in time for peak

ShipBob has been invaluable to us as we’ve expanded our B2B business, especially in our retail partnership with Target. Previously, we had just one of our SKUs in 300 Target stores; but this past fall, we launched 6 of our SKUs across 1,500 stores. That’s five times as many retail locations to stock, and a lot more orders to fulfill — all in time for Black Friday.

“Our Target launch was massive, but ShipBob didn’t bat an eye. Truthfully, we couldn’t have done it without ShipBob. The B2B and EDI requirements for any retailer are incredibly extensive, and you have to be very thorough and pack orders according to every specification. There’s no way we would have been able to manage all those details at scale without ShipBob’s expertise.”

Hayden Pembridge, VP of Operations at Nood

We received a tremendous amount of support from ShipBob throughout the entire process. They received and stowed our inventory in their warehouses, set up our EDI connection correctly, ensured we were compliant with retailer guidelines, and then packed enormous orders out perfectly. It was seamless. They even hired extra warehouse associates and worked through the weekend to make sure that we could launch on time, which was extremely helpful.

We’re still receiving excellent B2B support, even after the launch. We get about 29 POs per week across those six SKUs, and we have a dedicated retail operations manager at ShipBob who manages a lot of the legwork for those, like building the bills of landing (BOLs) and ensuring that orders are routed correctly. It’s all running very smoothly, in large part thanks to ShipBob.

Having experts take care of the complex, time-consuming parts of omnichannel logistics

At Nood, we keep our team incredibly lean. Because we’re so small, we don’t have the time or bandwidth to do everything ourselves or do it manually. ShipBob has allowed us to hand off so much of the daily, nitty-gritty tasks to experts, whether it’s creating the bill of landing, handling kitting orders, or even packing out products.

More importantly, ShipBob does all these things well. Orders are packed correctly, tracked meticulously to provide us with complete visibility, and arrive on time. It’s helped us keep our customers and retail partners happy and grow our customer base with far less effort.

We also don’t want to waste time doing everything manually, so we love that ShipBob’s solutions automate so much of the fulfillment process across all our channels.

For instance, we automate retail distribution for Target through ShipBob’s EDI connection with SPS Commerce. If we were to manage it by hand, it would require a ton of time and labor to learn each retailer’s guidelines, figure out how to send advance shipment notices (ASNs) correctly, and pack everything to perfection. But with ShipBob’s solution, SPS Commerce handles incoming purchase orders and sends ASNs directly to ShipBob. It’s that simple, and there’s no hassle for us.

“Automating B2B through ShipBob’s EDI solution is massively helpful in decreasing the amount of administrative work we do behind the scenes. We save three full-time employees’ worth of work with that connection, and ShipBob’s team is always available and ready if we need more support.”

Hayden Pembridge, Director of Operations at Nood

We also do a lot of business on Amazon, and ShipBob helps us automate and save time there as well. We previously used Amazon Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) through ShipBob, which was extremely easy to set up and very convenient. Now we use Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), and ShipBob’s FBA prep solution is by far the easiest solution I have ever used.

Amazon shipments can get really complicated and very tricky, and they’re also extremely strict and rigid about how they want to receive their inventory. Fortunately, ShipBob has really invested in their FBA Prep solution to make it as hands-free and simple as possible.

I just go into our ShipBob dashboard and create the FBA prep order as if I were creating an order for any customer. After that, I don’t have to think about it anymore – it goes to Amazon, it’s received properly, and everything just works. There’s an automatic connection with our Amazon account that creates shipments within the ShipBob dashboard. We don’t have to go over to Amazon to create those shipments anymore, which is a huge time saver.

Reliable support that resolves issues quickly and helps prevent them in the first place

Since our team is lean, it’s incredibly important for us to have a dedicated account manager whom we can contact at any point in the day, and ShipBob has been incredibly accommodating. We know with certainty that anytime we have an issue, we can reach out and receive a response within 24 hours, which gives us a lot of comfort.

Even more importantly, ShipBob resolves those issues quickly. With logistics, things will go wrong. It doesn’t matter who your partner is; every company will experience hiccups in logistics. But ShipBob’s team fixes problems fast, and then makes sure that they don’t happen again, which we really appreciate.

Our support team at ShipBob is even willing to go outside their wheelhouse to find solutions. For example, when we enrolled in a program to help protect our Amazon business against third-party resellers, that program’s software disrupted the flow with ShipBob’s FBA Prep solution — but ShipBob was extremely gracious and helped bridge that gap. They worked to make it even easier for us to ensure transparency labels are affixed correctly, even though it went outside of their typical system. Having that level of dedication says a lot about ShipBob and that they want to work with us and help us grow and succeed.

Getting a merchant-focused dashboard with both customer-driven data and features you didn’t know you needed

Another aspect of ShipBob’s solutions suite that makes our lives easier is the dashboard. You can tell that they put a lot of thought into building a system that brands would actually use. There are so many different reports that we can pull to see how we’re performing across inventory, fulfillment, and shipping, and they provide the right information exactly when we need it.

The ShipBob dashboard also comes with features you don’t even realize you wanted, like the ability to make claims with carriers with one click of a button. It’s a huge time saver, and something that we didn’t even think about optimizing. But ShipBob was ahead of the curve. They built it in, reached out to us about it, and helped us start using it. We love that they take initiative like that and love that our 3PL partner has that same drive.

Building community with fellow brands at ShipBob’s customer event, Fulfilled

Something that really sets ShipBob apart from the competition is how they create community and build connections between brands.

Any ShipBob event where merchants gather together is fantastic, but their annual merchant event, Fulfilled, is incredible. We had such a wonderful time getting to know our account managers better and sharing feedback with ShipBob’s leadership team face-to-face. And on top of that, we got the opportunity to connect with other brands like ours, and discuss how they’re leveraging all that ShipBob has to offer. It was a fantastic experience, and we’d love to go back someday.

What’s next for Nood

Right now, we’re really focused on expanding our IPL product line. We recently launched a new device that we’re super excited about, The Flasher Pro, which is the most powerful IPL device on the market right now. To have reached this new level of technology and efficiency is thrilling, and our customers are loving it, so we’re very excited to continue growing our market for that SKU.

Beyond product investment, our priority is continuing to scale. We’re a US-based company, but ShipBob has allowed us to reach a much broader customer base by supporting our fulfillment across global sales channels like Amazon and Target.

Even though we’re competing with international giants, we’re holding our own in the world market — and we’re a small team! ShipBob’s solutions and support have been crucial to that success, and we can’t wait to see where we grow next.
