The AI Shopper Landed. Now What?

Here’s what most Shopify brands miss heading into Black Friday: the shopper who finds you through ChatGPT has already done her research, and she’s landing straight on your product page with one question left.

If you’re doing $10K months or $1M months, this episode on answering AI-referred shoppers on your product pages is for you, whether you’re prepping your first holiday season or your tenth. Adobe tracked AI assistant traffic to US retail sites up 693% year over year last holiday season, and those visitors converted 31% better than other traffic.

After 20+ years in ecommerce (eBay Power Seller, co-founder and exit of VisionPros.com, and 6.5 years as a Senior Merchant Success Manager at Shopify working with 100+ brands including Dr. Squatch, Tentree, and Salt & Straw), I keep hearing the same handful of leftover questions from shoppers. Does it come in red? Will it fit me? Will it arrive by Christmas? Adobe now forecasts AI traffic up another 130% this holiday season, so those questions are about to get a lot more traffic.

In this solo episode, I walk through the playbook built on the five purchase barriers from Chapter 2 of my book, Thriving with Shopify: five questions, five fixes, almost all of them free, plus a six-week plan that gets you there before the holiday code freeze.

Let’s dive in. 👇

What You’ll Learn

✅  Why your product page is now the front door: Shopify says half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page, and you’ll hear what that means for the first 10 seconds a shopper gives you.

✅  The five questions every AI-referred shopper is still holding: One of them decides December for a lot of stores, and it isn’t price.

✅  Why fixing the page beats buying a chatbot: A $50K/month brand spent $15,000 on a shiny tool and still had the same two problems. You’ll hear what it missed.

✅  Two Shopify features worth turning on this month: One feeds the answers AI platforms give about your store, the other talks to shoppers, and they are not the same thing.

✅  The one day on the calendar where Amazon quietly wins: And the free move that takes that advantage away.

✅  A six-week plan by stage: Whether you’re under $10K a month or past $1M, you’ll know where to start, and what to leave alone until January.

Episode Summary

Here’s the scene I open with: a shopper on her couch the Sunday before Thanksgiving. She asks ChatGPT for a waterproof hiking boot under $200, asks two follow-ups, and taps through to your product page with exactly one question left. If your page can’t answer it, she goes back to the assistant, and the assistant happily recommends someone else. I break down why that shopper isn’t browsing at all. She’s already done the research, and she’s checking whether you’re the one.

From there, I get into the guardrail that shapes the whole episode, straight from Chapter 14 of the book. Before anyone runs off to buy an AI chatbot, you’ll hear the story of a $50K/month brand that spent $15,000 on AR while its checkout abandonment sat at 73% and returns ran 32%. The fancy tool couldn’t fix missing basics, so every fix in this episode follows the same order: free first, optional app second.

Then we work through the five purchase barriers using the real questions shoppers are still asking: color, fit, delivery by Christmas, trust and returns, and price. You’ll get the specific free fixes for each one, which Shopify-native features are worth switching on (and the one I’m careful not to oversell), and a few low-cost apps with real ratings if you’d rather not build it yourself. I also get honest about a Shopify badge that most listeners won’t qualify for, and why I wouldn’t count on it.

The last stretch is the part you can act on tonight: a six-week plan with real dates, what changes by revenue stage, a short list of things to leave alone, and a homework assignment that takes about 10 minutes per product. This isn’t theory. It’s a punch list you can start before you finish your coffee.

Strategic Takeaways

👉 Treat your product page like the front door, because for AI shoppers it is. Shopify said on its Q2 call that half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page, 2.5 times the rate of traditional search. Adobe’s holiday data shows those visitors convert 31% better and are 33% less likely to bounce. Open your top 10 product pages on your phone and ask the five questions out loud. Anything you can’t answer in 10 seconds goes on your list.

👉 Fix the page before you buy the tool. From Chapter 14: “AI chatbots do not fix unclear policies. They need good information to share.” The $50K/month brand that spent $15,000 on AR still had 73% checkout abandonment (shipping costs only showed at the final step) and 32% returns (unclear sizing info). A chatbot is only as good as the product data, policies, and pages behind it, whether you’re doing $10K months or $1M months.

👉 Make every answer a real, structured fact, not a sentence buried in a description. AI tools read structured data, so a color that only appears in your description doesn’t count. Make each color, size, and material a real variant with its own photo. Add a short FAQ to your top 10 product pages using questions pulled from your support inbox and reviews. Shopify’s Knowledge Base app lets you see and edit the answers AI platforms use about your store, but those answers don’t show on your storefront, so you still need the on-page FAQ.

👉 Pick one Christmas cutoff date and write it everywhere. If a shopper has to guess whether it arrives in time, she’ll buy from Amazon, because Amazon gives her a date. Decide your last order date for Christmas delivery today, then put that exact date on your product pages, shipping policy, FAQ, and Knowledge Base so your site, your chat, and ChatGPT all say the same thing. Show your free shipping threshold on the product page too, not just in the cart. Shop Promise is great if you qualify, but it’s US only, requires Shop Pay, and only the top 1% of shippers get in, so most of you will use an estimated delivery date app or a simple cutoff line instead.

👉 Put trust and price answers next to the add to cart button. A one-line returns promise like “Free returns until January 15” beats a link to a policy page. Email 20 recent customers this week and ask for reviews on your top five product pages, and turn on questions and answers in your reviews app if it has it. Then show the full price picture (price, shipping, your Black Friday offer) so there are no surprises at checkout, and consider a simple bundle for gift buyers instead of a deeper discount.

👉 Respect the calendar, and test your own answers. Black Friday is November 27, so the real deadline is sooner. One agency’s rule of thumb is to stop installing or removing apps around October 30 and lock code around November 20 (that’s a rule of thumb, not a Shopify rule). If you turn on Shopify’s Inbox agent (check your Inbox settings, because it’s off by default), ask it the five questions yourself and read every answer. If one is wrong, fix the source page, not the bot. And skip new A/B tests: you won’t reach significance before Black Friday.
