Shopify Agentic Plan: Who It’s Really For, and What “No Store Required” Leaves Out

Published:
September 30, 2026

Shopify’s Agentic plan lets brands on another ecommerce platform list products in Shopify Catalog for ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot with no monthly fee. It still requires an existing online store, verified business documents and solid product data, so it suits established non-Shopify brands, not beginners.

Quick Decision Framework

  • Who This Is For: Brands doing roughly $500K to $20M a year on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce or a custom stack who want to show up in AI shopping without a replatform project, plus the agencies advising them.
  • Skip If: You already sell on Shopify (Agentic Storefronts is already switched on in your admin), or you do not yet have a live online store, a registered business, and published return and privacy policies.
  • Key Benefit: A clear go or no-go decision on the plan in one read, plus a 30-day test that keeps direct checkout off until your own numbers justify turning it on.
  • What You’ll Need: Admin access to your current store and your domain’s DNS settings, your business registration document, a product export (CSV or PIM feed), and your published store policies.
  • Time to Complete: 12 minutes to read. Our estimate for setup is one to two working days for a catalog under 500 SKUs imported by CSV, and longer if you sync through the API or a PIM connector.

The plan’s own landing page says no Shopify online store required. The setup documentation asks for your existing store’s domain, a product URL on every item, and a business registration document. Both statements are true, and the gap between them decides who this plan is actually for.

What You’ll Learn

  • What the Agentic plan really costs, and why “no monthly fee” only covers half of how you pay
  • Which six setup requirements decide whether your catalog ever reaches an AI channel
  • Why direct checkout ships switched off on this plan, and when turning it on is worth the risk
  • Whether your brand fits the plan at your stage, from a $500K WooCommerce store to a mid-market brand running a PIM
  • How to run a 30-day discovery-only test and decide with your own analytics whether to keep going

On January 11, 2026, Shopify did something it had never done before: it opened its product catalog to brands that do not run their store on Shopify. The vehicle is the Agentic plan, and ten weeks later, on March 24, Shopify made the Agentic plan publicly available and rolled it out globally. The pitch is simple. Put your products into Shopify Catalog once, and they become shoppable across the AI assistants your customers already use, with no monthly fee.

That pitch is easy to compress into something slightly wrong: “sell on Shopify without a store.” The setup documentation tells a different story. The plan is built for brands that already have a store somewhere else, and it asks for proof of that before a single product reaches ChatGPT.

This piece is for the founder or operator running a non-Shopify store who wants to know whether this is the shortcut into agentic commerce. Here is what the plan is, what it costs, what it requires, and who should sign up.

What is Shopify’s Agentic plan?

Shopify’s Agentic plan is a no-monthly-fee account that lets brands selling on another ecommerce platform add their products to Shopify Catalog, so those products can be recommended and bought inside AI assistants without moving the store to Shopify. Shopify announced the plan alongside the Universal Commerce Protocol it co-developed with Google, describing Catalog as a collection of billions of products that specialized language models categorize, enrich and standardize.

The plan does not create a new channel. It gives outsiders access to one Shopify merchants already have. Every eligible Shopify store has Agentic Storefronts switched on by default, which syndicates its catalog to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. The Agentic plan extends that same pipe to brands on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, legacy platforms and custom builds. Shopify’s help center documentation for the Agentic plan names three target users: businesses on legacy or custom platforms, businesses that do not want to connect to each AI channel individually, and businesses that want to build a Shopify store before paying for a subscription.

One detail worth knowing before you plan around a specific assistant. The marketing page lists Perplexity among the surfaces your products reach, while the setup documentation currently covers four channels: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Meta, and Microsoft Copilot. Plan around the four that are documented and treat anything else as upside.

If you already sell on Shopify, you can stop here for your own store. The strategic picture of what agentic commerce means for a Shopify catalog, and the one admin setting worth opening this week, is covered in our complete guide to agentic commerce for Shopify merchants.

What does the Agentic plan cost?

The Agentic plan has no monthly subscription fee, and you pay card processing only when a shopper completes an order through a Shopify-powered direct checkout, from 2.9% plus 30 cents on the US Agentic plan page and from 2.8% plus 30 cents CAD on the Canadian Agentic plan page. That “only pay when your products sell” line is accurate, and it is also only half of how money moves.

Payment fees depend on which checkout the shopper uses. Some AI channels send shoppers back to your existing store to buy. ChatGPT works this way for every Agentic plan brand, so a ChatGPT sale runs through whatever processor your current store already uses, at whatever rate you already pay there. Shopify’s rate applies only on channels where you have switched on direct checkout, which today means Google AI Mode and Gemini, Meta and Copilot. Paid apps you install carry their own charges, and moving to a paid Shopify plan to publish a Shopify storefront brings that plan’s subscription fee.

There is also an enterprise version, sold through Shopify’s sales team, that adds unlimited staff, combined listings, carrier-calculated shipping, extra inventory locations and API rate limits in line with Shopify Plus. Shopify does not publish its price.

The real cost is labour, and it scales with how often your catalog changes. Illustrative example: a 300-SKU brand whose prices change quarterly can live with a periodic CSV import. A 4,000-SKU brand with daily inventory swings needs real-time sync through the GraphQL Admin API or a PIM connector, which usually means developer or partner time. Price the plan on that line, not the subscription line.

What does the Agentic plan require before products go live?

The Agentic plan requires an existing online store on another platform, because every product needs an external URL pointing to its page on your current site and your store domain must be verified in Shopify with a DNS TXT record. That is the requirement the “no Shopify online store required” headline leaves out. No Shopify storefront is needed. A storefront somewhere is.

Shopify’s setup guide for agentic storefronts on the Agentic plan lists the rest, and it reads like a bank account application more than a free trial. You publish three policies in your Shopify admin: terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy. You add business details, complete identity verification, and upload an official business registration document. Then each product has to clear the bar in Shopify’s requirements for inclusion in Shopify Catalog: a title, at least one image, a price above zero, the external product URL, and no mature or sensitive content.

The requirement that surprises people sits at the bottom of that Catalog page. Eligibility also depends on account standing and operating history, reviewed over time. Shopify asks for a track record of genuine sales to real customers, prompt fulfillment, a low chargeback rate and on-time invoice payments. A brand-new business with no sales history is not what this plan was designed around.

One reporting gap to plan for as well. On the Agentic plan you cannot review your ChatGPT order history inside Shopify. Those orders complete on your own checkout, so your existing analytics platform is where you measure them.

Add it up and the plan is closer to a syndication account for established merchants than an entry point for new ones.

Why is direct checkout switched off on the Agentic plan?

Direct checkout is deactivated by default on the Agentic plan, so until you opt in channel by channel, AI assistants surface your products and send shoppers to your own site to buy. To sell inside Google AI Mode and Gemini, Meta or Copilot, you manually opt in to each channel after setup and activate direct checkout, which also means configuring payments, shipping rates and taxes inside Shopify. ChatGPT never uses direct checkout on this plan; it acts as a referrer.

I think the default is the right call, and the best evidence for it came from the largest retailer to try the alternative. Walmart offered roughly 200,000 products through OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, and its EVP of product and design, Daniel Danker, said purchases completed inside ChatGPT converted at one third the rate of shoppers who clicked through to its website, according to Search Engine Land’s March 19, 2026 report. Walmart moved away from the in-chat purchase and is embedding its own assistant instead.

Hold that number carefully. It is one retailer, on one surface, using OpenAI’s own checkout rather than the Shopify-powered checkouts in Google and Copilot. It is a warning, not a verdict on every direct checkout. The history of how that in-chat model was designed, and why it stalled, is in our earlier explainer on how ChatGPT Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol were built to work.

There is also an operational reason to wait. Turning on direct checkout means Shopify becomes a second order system for your business. Refunds on AI channel orders must be processed in your Shopify admin whatever payment provider you use, and if you fulfill outside Shopify you have to push order status back so the AI channel can update the customer. For a $2M brand with one ops person, that is a real new workload. Start with discovery and earn the right to add checkout.

Who should use the Agentic plan?

The Agentic plan fits established brands on non-Shopify platforms with clean, structured catalogs that want AI distribution without a replatform project. The fit changes with your stage and your data setup more than with your category.

Your situation
Fit
First move
WooCommerce or BigCommerce brand, $500K to $2M
Good, discovery only
CSV import of top 50 SKUs
Mid-market brand with a PIM, $2M to $20M
Strong
PIM connector with real-time sync
Enterprise on a legacy or custom stack
Strong, via enterprise version
Talk to Shopify sales first
Agency with non-Shopify clients
Useful as a service
Pilot one client catalog
Shopify brand with a second storefront elsewhere
Situational
Evaluate for that storefront only

If you are in the $500K to $2M band, keep this small. This is exactly the stage where brands add channels faster than their operations can support them, and a new channel on top of a shaky catalog makes the catalog problems more visible, not less. Import your 50 best sellers, leave checkout off, and look at the results before touching the rest.

If you are at $2M and above with a PIM already feeding marketplaces, the plan is closer to a free distribution endpoint. Shopify lists PIM connector apps as a supported import route with real-time syncing, and its landing page says orders can be routed to your existing order management system. Your main job is keeping price and inventory accurate, because a recommendation for an out-of-stock product does more harm than no recommendation.

Who should skip the Agentic plan?

Skip the Agentic plan if you already sell on Shopify, if you do not yet have a live store and a registered business, or if your catalog data is too thin for an AI assistant to recommend with confidence. Each of those groups is better served by something else.

Shopify merchants have nothing to gain here. Your products already flow to AI channels through Agentic Storefronts, managed under Sales channels, then Agentic, in your admin.

Aspiring founders who read “no store required” should hear the requirements plainly: an existing store domain, a registered business, published policies, and an operating history Shopify reviews over time. This plan cannot be the first step. A store, a handful of real customers and a clean policy page come first.

Brands with thin product data should fix that before paying the setup cost. Shopify is explicit that eligibility does not guarantee a product appears in any AI answer, because each channel decides what to show for each request. Two-line descriptions, missing materials and dimensions, and vague variant names are exactly what an assistant filters out. Before you import anything, run the ten-minute prompt test in our AI visibility audit checklist for catalogs against your own store. If AI assistants cannot describe your products accurately from your current site, they will not do better with the same data in a new catalog.

Finally, if you sell mature or sensitive products, Shopify Catalog excludes that content, so the plan is not an option at any stage.

One honest caveat for everyone else: Catalog is one route into AI shopping, not the only one. Shopify’s own documentation notes that Google AI Mode and Gemini also draw on product data from Google Merchant Center, so a brand already running a clean Merchant Center feed has a path to Google’s AI surfaces today. The Agentic plan’s value is reaching several assistants from one catalog, not being the only door.

What does the free store builder say about Shopify’s strategy?

The Agentic plan includes a Shopify online store you can build and preview for free but cannot publish until you move to a paid plan, which makes the plan an on-ramp to Shopify as much as an AI channel. Your store stays password protected, and customers cannot buy through it. When you upgrade, your products, settings and agentic setup all carry over, and your AI channel links switch from your old store to your new Shopify one once it is published.

None of this is hidden. Shopify’s own help center lists building a Shopify store before paying as one of the plan’s three intended uses. It is also a smart piece of platform design: the most expensive part of any replatform is moving and cleaning the catalog, and the Agentic plan gets you to do that work inside Shopify for a reason that has nothing to do with replatforming.

Run that through the merchant independence filter. Joining for AI distribution is a reasonable decision on its own merits. The risk is drifting into a platform move because the tooling happens to be half set up, rather than deciding it the way you would any other migration, on checkout performance, total cost, apps and team skills. When I was on Shopify’s merchant success team, the migrations that went best were the ones where the brand had decided on the merits before any tooling was in place.

The 18-month view is the stronger argument for signing up. If Shopify Catalog keeps becoming a default product layer that AI assistants read from, being outside it costs discovery, and being inside it through this plan is cheap. Take the distribution. Make the platform decision separately, on purpose.

How do you test the Agentic plan in 30 days?

Run the Agentic plan as a 30-day, discovery-only test on your 50 best-selling products, with direct checkout left off and success measured in your own analytics rather than in Shopify’s dashboard. Fifty SKUs is enough to see whether assistants pick you up, and small enough to finish setup in a week.

Week one is verification and policies. Complete identity verification, upload your business registration, verify your domain with the TXT record, and publish your terms, privacy and return policies in Shopify. Write the return policy in plain numbers: days, conditions, and who pays return shipping. Assistants answer those questions on your behalf using whatever text they can read, and the same answer-first structure that gets Shopify brands cited in AI search works for policy pages for exactly the same reason.

Week two is the catalog. Import your top 50 SKUs by revenue with the external product URL on each one, check that titles carry the attributes a shopper would filter on, and add your most common pre-purchase questions in the Shopify Knowledge Base app, which comes installed on Agentic plan stores and feeds store facts and FAQs to AI agents.

Weeks three and four are measurement. Segment referral sessions from AI assistants in your own analytics so they stop hiding inside direct traffic, then compare their conversion rate and new customer rate with your organic search baseline. Illustrative decision rule: if AI-referred sessions convert at half your organic rate or better, expand to the full catalog and consider switching on direct checkout for one channel. If they convert far lower, keep the channel as low-cost awareness and put your effort back into your core channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Shopify Agentic plan?

The Shopify Agentic plan is a no-monthly-fee account for brands that run their ecommerce store on another platform, letting them add products to Shopify Catalog so AI assistants can recommend and sell them. Shopify announced it on January 11, 2026 and made it publicly available worldwide on March 24, 2026. Products listed through the plan can surface in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and the Shop app. It is aimed at businesses on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, legacy or custom platforms that want AI distribution without migrating their store. Brands already selling on Shopify do not need it, because Agentic Storefronts already syndicates their catalog to the same AI channels by default.

How much does the Shopify Agentic plan cost?

The Shopify Agentic plan has no monthly fee, and you pay card processing only on orders completed through a Shopify-powered direct checkout, from 2.9% plus 30 cents in the US and 2.8% plus 30 cents CAD in Canada. On channels such as ChatGPT that send shoppers to your existing store to buy, the sale runs through your current payment processor at your current rates. Paid apps add their own charges, and publishing a Shopify storefront requires moving to a paid Shopify plan. An enterprise version with Shopify Plus level API limits and extra features is available through Shopify’s sales team without published pricing. For most brands the largest real cost is the time spent keeping product data synced.

Do I need a website to use the Shopify Agentic plan?

Yes, you need an existing online store on another platform to use the Shopify Agentic plan. Every product must include an external URL linking to that product’s page on your current store, and your store domain has to be added and verified in Shopify with a DNS TXT record before AI channels can link back to you. You also publish terms of service, privacy and return policies, verify your identity, and upload a business registration document. Shopify reviews account standing and operating history for Catalog eligibility, including genuine sales and low chargebacks. The plan removes the need for a Shopify storefront, not the need for a storefront, so it is not a way to start selling online without a website.

Can I use the Agentic plan if I already have a Shopify store?

You do not need the Agentic plan if you already have a Shopify store, because the plan exists for brands that do not use Shopify as their ecommerce platform. Eligible Shopify stores already have Agentic Storefronts switched on by default, which makes their products available to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta through Shopify Catalog. You manage those channels in your Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic. The one situation worth evaluating is a Shopify brand that also runs a separate storefront on another platform, where the Agentic plan could cover that second store specifically. For your main Shopify store, the better investment is improving product titles, attributes and policies.

Does the Agentic plan let customers check out inside ChatGPT?

No, customers do not check out inside ChatGPT on the Agentic plan, because ChatGPT acts as a referrer that sends shoppers to your existing store’s checkout. The purchase happens in ChatGPT’s in-app browser, or in a new tab when the shopper uses ChatGPT on the web. In-conversation checkout is available on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Meta and Microsoft Copilot, but direct checkout is deactivated by default on the Agentic plan, so you must opt in to each channel and configure payments, shipping and taxes in Shopify first. Walmart reported that purchases completed inside ChatGPT converted at one third the rate of click-through visits, which is a good reason to start discovery-only.
